Last month, The Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery unveiled The Tank.
A chair with a plexiglass base & leather seat, is a Pharrell Williams creation. To better understand Pharrell’s desire to create this chair and its significance check out his interview with Dezeen.com.
My intital reaction was; Uggghh! Another musical artist looking to expand his empire. However, after reading the interview, I can now appreciate the conceptual significance of the chair.
There has been a lot of buzz surrounding The Tank. So clearly, Pharrell has achieved his goal of using art to create discussion. However, the chair is simply two familiar items- a school style seat & Caterpillar tracks fused together. Nothing too innovative here. Generally, I think its fine, but for someone looking to make a statement, he could have pushed the design so much farther. In the interview, Pharrell verbally expressed his ideas and desires so eloquently, unfortunately The Tank isn’t as well articulated.
While I applaud his efforts, and respect him as an artist, however my initial reaction remains unchanged…Musical genius, yes. Design genius, perhaps not.
